Snippets of Story [March Edition]

Katie from the blog Whisperings of the Pen hosts the monthly "Snippets of Story" event. It's a time to show off short little bits of your work-in-progress.

My main WIP is just a sloppy first draft right now, but I thought I'd post a few snippets anyway, with the disclaimer that they may not make it into my final draft.

I've also included some snippets from my short stories, both completed and in progress.

Here are a few of mine:

Simon huddled down onto the couch.

He was shivering and felt weak.

He pulled his phone out of his pocket and texted Martin Shaw.

-I don't think I can do this.-

He slipped his phone back in his pocket and put the tips of his fingers together. He leaned his head against his hands, trying to control himself.

This was irrational. It had happened years ago. Why would it be affecting him now?

Hugh turned to see Martin and Simon standing behind him.

Simon watched him closely as he quickly took in the situation.

"Dr. Shaw," Hugh said smoothly. "How nice to finally meet you."

"Dr. Moore, you must meet my colleague Simon King," said Martin, waving towards Simon.

"Ah yes," said Hugh, extending his hand. "The detective. We've met before."

Simon grasped Hugh's hand and their eyes met and locked.

"I just don't like it," said Grace.

"All those important people up in one spaceship. Just think of what could happen."

Hugh's eyes lit up as he considered the possibilities.

"Er... this is Michael," I told Magdalene. "He's my friend."

Michael put his elbows on the table and his chin in his hands, looked over the board, and informed me, "You're about to lose your queen."

I looked down at the board. The queen was open, true, but my pawn was blocking Magdalene's rook and her bishop was on the other side of the board.

"Dude, I'm not going to lose the queen."

I looked up at Magdalene. Her nose wrinkled up in that way it did when she was about to make a winning move. I looked back down at the queen, just as Magdalene picked up the white knight with her rainbow-colored fingernails and gently knocked my queen off of the board. Darn, I forgot about the knight.

"You're too confident, man," said Michael.

Magdalene smiled at me. I smiled back.

"Now, let's see,” Marco said. “Something nice and painful."

He paused at a dog-eared page.

"Here we go," he said. "I haven't tried this one. The spell of threes. This should be interesting."

"If I might make a suggestion," said Drake.

"No," said Marco.

He smoothed out the page.

"Now, lie very still."

He held his hand over Drake.

"By three and three and three again, I cast enact - entrap-"

He peered at the book.

"Enchantment," said Drake.
