The Taste of the End of Summer

Summer is winding down now, isn't it? I think one of the most distinctive reminders that summer is ending is the taste of freshly picked apples. The taste of the end of summmer.

This poem was going to be entered in Britt's poetry contest, but unfortunately I spaced out and forgot to submit it yesterday. But here it is anyway, for you to enjoy.

The Taste of the End of Summer
Lauren Shearer 2012

Take an apple
Crisp from the tree,
Lightly baked by the waning sun
And crunch into the freshness of the fragrant skin
With the sweet-tart juice fleeing down your wrist
And just a hint of autumn
In the texture on your tongue.

****************

What will you miss most about summer? What are you looking forward to this fall?

  2. Miss about summer? Hm... how 'bout nothing!? LOL! I am so ready for the lovely autumn weather and the days when I can walk outside needing a light sweater while clutching a cup of something hot and enjoying the warm sun. BEST TIME of the year - every year. :-)

  3. Love the poem! Autumn is my favorite season. I guess the only thing I'd miss about summer, are the pretty flowers.

  4. Vivid poem, Lauren! You can feel summer ending and autumn beginning in it.

I have to admit that I won't be missing summer. Ever since we moved to Arizona, it's my least favorite season. Normally, I'd be looking forward to autumn because of the crisp air, cinnamon smells, and sweaters. But...we don't have that here, either. So, I'm looking forward to winter. ;)

  5. Autumn is my favorite season. I love the colors and the food and snuggling up in a favorite sweatshirt.

The only thing I will miss about summer is going over to Lake Michigan's bike path (in Chicago, it's only a couple blocks from me). It's too cold for me in the autumn.
